Hayato “Nick” Nakamura

A nail that could not be hammered down

Hayato “Nick” Nakamura was born and raised in Fukuoka, Japan.

In Japan, there is an old Japanese saying that “the nail that sticks out must be hammered down.” This applied to Mr. Nakamura, whose high energy and strong sense of justice resulted in fights with local gangs who bullied his friends. At 20 years old, this determination and fighting spirit drove him to move out of Japan and come to the United States. He graduated from Seinan Gakuin University in Fukuoka; Chaffey College in Alta Loma, California; and La Verne University Law School.

Today, he is active in the American Hardwood Export Council’s Strategic Planning Committee, where he served as Chair from 1999-2000. Mr. Nakamura promotes the use of North American Hardwood in Japan, encouraging more eco-friendly and environmentally responsible lumber products.

He lives in Phoenix, Arizona with his wife, Cynthia. He has a son who lives in Champagne, IL, and a daughter in New York City.
